About This Work
This group of pieces is a fine example of Stephen’s bold technique of artists’ original printing. He works with large plates using all the techniques of intaglio to create highly textured images, almost "building" the plates from which the prints are taken. The use of colour in the inks he selects is so dense, the prints approximate the characteristics of paintings.
Artist Background
Stephen was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and graduated in Fine Art with a First Class Honours Degree and Printmaking with Distinction from Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork in 1994. Since then he has pursued a career as a professional artist, exhibiting work throughout Ireland as well as in Michael Gold’s Gallery and the Zeckendorff Towers in New York, USA and the Galleri Helle Knudsen in Stockhold Sweden. Stephen’s work is also in the collections of the Guinness Office of Public Works; the New York Public Library Print Collection; the Arts Council of Ireland; Microsoft, Sandyford; Uppsala University, Sweden; and the offices of Ernst &Young in Stockholm. He is a member of the prestigious and influential Black Church Print Studio in Dublin’s Temple Bar.
