The Barren Landscape III

Liam O'Callaghan

Artist Status: Purchase

About This Work
Liam does much landscape artwork and was commissioned to a residency in Canada, 'The Barren Landscape Project' to look at landscapes devoid of trees and natural organisms. He observed such areas of desolation from a microscopic viewpoint and discovered that far from being barren, these areas were alive with tiny growths and creatures quite invisible to the naked eye. Using samples of these natural phenomena, Liam digitally scanned them in order to capture their exquisite luminosity and colouration and then printed the images onto aluminium mounted screens by a process called dyeprint.

Artist Background
Liam has gradually shifted from his initial training in graphics and photography towards Fine Art and is now based in the Broadstone Studios, a major figure in the artistic circles of Dublin. He has exhibited work throughout Europe and Canada and his most recent exhibition of works was at the Royal Hibernian Academy. Liam is working on one of the most significant commissions in Dublin at the moment: as the Central Bank of Ireland’s Sculpture Prize winner he is to build a steel structure with both a light and sound installation
within the Temple Bar district of the city.
