About This Work
Emma is a most dedicated and hardworking artist, gifted both in her painterly skills and her drawing ability. Accordingly the subject matter of her work is varied; landscape is her current preoccupation but as her recent exhibition at the Ava Gallery, Clandboye, showed, her figurative work is excellent and the series of paintings of wild birds showed vibrant use of the paint to place the birds within the camouflage of their environments. Belfast is currently undergoing a transformation of construction work and this image seen from the window of her studio, is a striking view of such activity in progress.

Artist Background
Emma was born in Bray, County Wicklow in 1976 and graduated in Fine Art from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dunlaoghaire in 1997, later taking an MA in Fine Art at the University of Ulster in 2004. Since then she has developed her career as a professional artist, enjoying considerable success at the Ava Gallery’s exhibition in Belfast during 2004. Emma was a prize winner at the Zurich Young Artists’ competition, 2005, the Carson McDowell Award in 2004, and she has won the President’s Prize at the Royal Ulster Academy, 2002. She toured New York with the Young Contemporaries group in 2006 and Emma’s work is in the collections of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Zurich Insurance, the Law Society of Ireland, the Office of Public Works, Dublin, and the Queens and Ulster Universities in Belfast. She is currently a member of the Queen Street Studio group in Belfast.
